Luck was not on President Donald Trump’s side when his team debuted a new green “Make America Great Again” hat. Besides its absolutely outrageous price, the hat also mistakenly used a four-leaf clover as the symbol of Ireland instead of the shamrock.
The $50 green-and-gold hat features Trump’s presidential campaign slogan and was meant to help “capture the luck of the Irish” on St. Patrick’s Day. The official hat, however, missed the mark by failing to embroider the real Irish symbol of the shamrock on the back. While the four-leaf clover is often associated with luck, it actually has nothing to do with Ireland.

According to the Smithsonian magazine, the meaning behind the shamrock actually dates back to the fourth century. “Legend has it that St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, used the three-leaf clover to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Ghost) in the fourth century A.D. while converting the Irish to Christianity.” While St. Patrick’s connection to the shamrock in his teachings is unknown, it is firmly rooted in Irish history, the Smithsonian writes.
Furthermore, Team Trump’s “luck of the Irish” description could also be problematic. An old mining expression with an American origin, “luck of the Irish” actually carried a tone of derision before being seen as a more positive phrase. Mental Floss reports:
“During the gold and silver rush years in the second half of the 19th century, a number of the most famous and successful miners were of Irish and Irish American birth. . . .Over time this association of the Irish with mining fortunes led to the expression ‘luck of the Irish.’ Of course, it carried with it a certain tone of derision, as if to say, only by sheer luck, as opposed to brains, could these fools succeed.”
Overall, the hat failed to make anything great again.
